From time to time, when I’m working on old bikes, I need some welding help. Usually, I need something real small done. Once I snapped off part of a coil-mount bracket on a frame. Once I felt like the cross bar on the sub-frame (right behind the seat) was weak (the bike was 36 years old) and wanted it totally replaced (it’s two inches long but holds those two bars that run under the seat together).
The problem is no one wants to do these small jobs. About three months ago I literally put a want ad in Craigslist to help with the coil mount above. I got a response from Kevin at Metal Masters (813-244-3517). He’s over in Thonotosassa, off 301, just north of the AutoZone Store. His business is mostly about low-riding pickups and cars. But that business is apparently off, like most all businesses, and he’s looking for some other stuff.
Anyway, he welded the bracket back on for $20, while I waited. I’ve had him do a couple other things since. I recently had a vintage exhaust pipe (on the possessed 71 Bultaco) that badly chipped right at the exhaust manifold flange. Rather than weld the chip back in place, Kevin cut off the weak part of the pipe and welded on a whole new length of pipe…$40. That pipe would have cost a fortune to replace, assuming I even could find one. More important, he did a great job!
If you’ve got any type of welding job that you need fast and well-done (and not just small stuff), give this guy a call. He's got a complete shop. Super nice guy, too!
