And speaking of the Marx bros., it turns out that Zeppo, the agent and oft-forgotten brother who made only occasional appearances with his more talented and charisamtic bros., was quite the wanna-be inventor and engineer. He designed and produced a model of low-HP motorbike called the "Marman twin" around 1948-1950. They had 3hp and were much like the "Whizzer" bikes  that were essentially Schwinns with strap-on engines. His other inventions were also done under the "Marman" name. He invented the "Marman  clamp" , a flat band clamp used in nearly every moving vehicle in use today. They were invented during WWII and held the atomic bombs to the cargo bay of the Enola Gay. They are also used in space vehicles. Damn!!!

So how about that...He wasn't funny, but he was REALLY smart!

Features:

-3 1/2 horsepower, balanced, horizontally opposed motor
-Chrome plated gas tank, glove compartment, belt guard, exhaust pipes, and muffler
-Positive clutch.....automotive type multiple plate, dry disc clutch allows immediate pickup without pedalling and easy idling at stops
-Steel cable V-belt drives throughout
-Top pickup, cruising, and climb ablilty, gear ratios set to get exceptional pickup at low speed, easy cruising speed of 30-35 miles per hour and superior hill climbing ablilty
-Over 100 miles per gallon
-Manufactured by Marman Products Company, INC. P.O. Box 89, Inglewood, California

I was wondering if anyone was going to notice that.

Piss him off and it would have brought a whole new meaning to "Wall of Death."

Yeah, I noticed it too. I think I would want the lion de-clawed and de-toothed and on a seditive if I was going to be riding that close to it.

Here you go…found it. Apparently, “Lion Dromes” were popular attractions in the late 20s. The above photo was taken at a Lion Drome in 1929 in Revere Beach, Massachusetts. Here’s another:

These are two pages on Lion Dromes out of a website that chronicles the history of the Wall of Death:

http://www.thrillarena.com/Lion_Dromes1/lion_dromes1.html
http://www.thrillarena.com/Lions_and_Ladies/lions_and_ladies.html

At the bottom of the first link is the story on how Lion Dromes came to an end.

Looks funny...the guy's jumping off. This, according to the source, was an early "crash testing" photo.

I’ve seen this motorcycle before, and had to run it down. It’s a streamlined Harley that set a land speed record of 136mph on Daytona Beach in 1937.
