Anyone ever thought of an auxiliary tank mod? Neither would I, but I’ve come across one on another forum that caught my attention for obvious reasons. These photos reflect the in-process installation of a seven-gallon "Tour Tank" auxiliary fuel tank on the back of a 2009 XR1200.

Why, you ask, would someone do this? In this case, the owner is a member of the Iron Butt Association, which sponsors 1000+ mile (daily) rides, and I guess it’s actually quite competitive. So this is his solution to the limited 175m range of the 3.5 gallon XR tank.

Don't we have a member who's an IBA Member and rider?

Here’s a link to the source of the auxiliary tank.

That's crazy. My butt has no iron whatsoever.

I'd like to hear more about the IBA and how it works (not that I'd ever do it; just interesting). From what I read on the other forum, it's quite competitive and complicated. For example, the guy that is doing this to the XR was saying that there's a scavenger hunt involved, where the riders need to get photos of certain things along the way. Anyway, it sounds like a lot more than just hauling a thousand miles a day.

As for the aux tank, I couldn't imagine any other reason for doing that, especially with the XR. It's not just me; it's notorious for having an uncomfortable seat and ergos not conducive to touring. TMI no doubt, but I wear impact shorts.  Wink

Holy jeezus! That's just insane! I've done a few stints that were almost iron butt worthy but nothing justifying that setup.

Oh, and I used an auxiliary tank today as a matter of fact! Coolant reservoir worked perfect as an auxiliary tank while I was tuning my XR200. Grin
