This Barber Motorsports Museum looks like such a cool place. These are at the Barber Motorsports Museum. This one is at the Barber Motorsports Museum. The museum is in Birmingham, about 580 miles (9 hours) from Tampa. The website said they have about 1,200 motorcycles, half of which are on display ( FAQ); they told me on the phone that they currently have 750 motorcycles. The reason I called was to ask how long it takes to “do” the place, and they said two hours. Seems low for that much stuff. Anyway, looks like something cool to do over the long Memorial Day weekend coming up. Anyone else want to go?

It is definitely a cool place to check out. I don't see how you can go through it in 2 hours though. I went to it last year with my brother and we were there for about 4 1/2 hours and could have spent more time looking at some of the bikes. I took over 400 pics while I was there. I had an extra battery for the camera charged up and had to use it but forgot extra batteries for the big flash. Oh well, I will have to better next time. Very interesting the way some of the items were displayed. Well worth the trip.

I noticed that they have an AHRMA sponsored Vintage Festival in early October that looks really interesting. I’d love to see some of those old bikes in action.

Yeah, it is a big place. That's why I couldn't believe they said 2 hours to go through it. Like I said my brother and I was there for about 4 1/2 hours and could have spent more time looking at some of the stuff in more detail.

They actually said an hour and a half to two hours. Motorcycle trees, wow! That last shot must be the Lotus section.

That last shot must be the Lotus section. There is actually another section that have some more Lotus' that are more up close and personal. I think the bones brothers need to take a trip and meet up at the Museum. Make sure you wear your bib so you don't drool all over every thing there.

There are 4 racks like this that are 15 bikes high. Two are on either side of the elevator.

Its 670 miles from me. I have new tires. All I need is an oil change and I'm good to go.

You’ve got a whole week to get the oil changed.
Assuming the weather works out for the trip, I was going to head up Saturday (8 or 9 AMish), do the museum Sunday (opens at noon so Bones can sleep in) and head back Monday morning. However, I’m flexible; just prefer to venture new territory on the bike during daylight hours. There’s probably some other stuff we can do in between. I’ll check on accommodations. Sweeeet!

I'm spending the whole weekend in Floral City so I can't go. I've got a BBQ planned. Are you and Bag going to meet up there?

Well, if not, think about a run up there for that Vintage Festival in October. I’m a long-time AHRMA member and have been to many of their off-road events. They always did a good job organizing those. The more I think about it, the more I’d really like to see some of those old GP and other road racers in action. It could be a good time for a bunch of us.

My Memorial day weekend has been claimed with family events. The Barber museum is on my short list of places to get to soon. Maybe another weekend in June?
I may be heading back to the tail of the Dragon in July as well.

I made the trip up to Leeds on Saturday, visited the Barber Museum on Sunday and made the trip back today. 1,100 miles round trip. Mapquest said 9 hours…it was 12 hours up. The weather really sucked on Saturday. I was in rain gear from the Georgia border all the way up to Leeds. Coming back, I really pushed it, but it still took 10.5 hours. Except for the weather on Saturday, once I got off I75 in Georgia, this was actually a nice ride. Lots of hills and twisties…very scenic. Lots and lots of bikes out there. Everyone waved, even in the rain. The museum was, of course, awesome. The place is just sick. There’s no way that I can pick out what photos to post so I loaded up a PHOTOBUCKET album if you’d like to look. There’s 150+ photos in there. Overall, this was pretty good trip and I’m glad I did it. Enjoy the photos.

btw what was your first reaction when you first walked in and then when you got a little ways past where you pay?? Mine was WOW!! and then I was speachless!!

I happen to have a photo of that very experience. Here’s my response…I turned around to the guy at the counter and said, “Holy Shit, how do you do this place?” True! I have another kind of funny story along the lines of how this place is set up that I’ll share later. My biz partner is out this week, so it’s bizzzy this morning. ____________________

Wow, amazing photos! What an incredible museum. That's a gutsy trip going 20+ hours solo in 3 days!! How's that new seat treating you now?

The seat was good for about the first 150 to 200, and then it felt like the old seat. My XR owners group is talking about a group meet…in Utah. That will be the gutsy trip.

Hey, I’m up for that trip again. This time though I’d like to spend a couple more days exploring. Maybe it’s just from living so long in Flatistan, but I still can’t get over how nice it was up there. Lots of mountains and curvey roads running through thick forests, and those were the main roads! I never got to check back roads. dcameras can probably confirm this, but Barber is somewhere in the middle of nowhere. When I arrived I asked at the hotel where the nearest restaurant was. Eight miles away.

Here’s one of the bikes that I snapped a shot of at the Barber Museum. I’ve now learned that there’s quite a story behind this bike and the guy who built it. Here’s a link to a documentary Britten: Backyard Visionary. There are six segments to the documentary (the last is just a few seconds of credits) and it’s around 45 minutes in total. It’s just something you might like to watch when you have some free time…

Well, whadya know? Next weekend the fam and I are going to central Iowa to visit some relatives. Thinking of breaking in the new bike trailer, I start looking for places to ride, and looky what I found... J&P Cycles in Anamosa, IA is having their yearly open house bash. Looks like fun and is only an hour or so away from where we will be. http://www.jpcycles.com/pages/openhouseAlso in Anamosa, The National Motorcycle Museum. I spoke with oone of the curators at the Cycle World show in Chicago for a while about a mind-blowing original condition wood-track Harley they had brought to the show. I told him I would get to their museum ASAP. That time has come! http://nationalmcmuseum.org/To top off my good fortune, Arlen Ness will be there at a fund raiser for the new museum wing dedicated to his works. Jackpot!

Sweet! Sounds like a good time. No, I’ve never been there. I don’t think I’ve ever been to Iowa for that matter. I know I’ve seen photos of the inside of that museum though. They have the Steve McQueen and Easy Rider exhibits…there’s a good slide show in their website. Unlike Barber, which was only motorcycles, it looks like this museum has a ton of other motorcycle stuff to look over. Very cool. Hey, don’t tell Arlen I was making fun of some of his creations in here.

I've seen this bike before. It was at the Orlando Museum of Art in an Art of the Motorcycle exhibit. I wish I could find my photos of that day!
