Even though I'm still about 9 months from when I plan to sell my Honda and buy a new bike, I'm already thinking about options.

I was considering a Sportster. Anyone doing 2up riding on a Sportster? I know that it's no Road King when it comes to 2up, but I'm wondering if anyone is doing it? How's it working out for you?

I take my wife out on my every once in a while. Cruising around town, it does fine. But, I do have Road King rear air shocks on it and a big sissy bar on the back. 2up, I wouldn't go on any long distance highway trips with it though, that's what baggers and goldwings are for, right?

Too true, MrBones. Just have a bit of the Harley bug, and the only way I'm going to end up with a Harley at this point, is if it's a Sportster.

We don't really do any distance stuff right now anyway, but that might change over time.

Yeah, well I love mine. And "dt" loves his, I think. His a different animal than mine. Mine is a traditional 883 cruiser type, his is the XR 1200 sport version. The 883 runs out of HP around 70mph, but it's never bothered me enough to upgrade it to a 1200 (that and the expense). I've got an SV650 if I want to sport ride.

There’s a used one for sale down at Brandon Harley. Just like mine except it’s got some D&D slip-ons. I was down there getting another new rear tire…damaged it somehow, but don’t remember hitting anything. The XR has a pillion pad and passenger pegs, but I wouldn’t make anyone sit back there.

I’ve had two Sportsters; the one before was a 1974 XLH1000 Ironhead; candy apple red…very nice. I sold it in early 1991 to a dude who paid me way more than it was worth. I didn’t even have it up for sale. I had it down at the old Tampa Harley dealer (before Jim Ferman bought the Franchises) having them put one of those “new fangled oil coolers” on ( Smiley ) back when they were down on Hillsborough and 50th in Tampa. One of their sales guys called up and said some dude from Europe wanted to buy it and what’ll I take. I said I’ll take $4,500 (it was worth maybe $3,000 back then, about what I paid for it back in 1982), and he said okay! So the dude that bought it then proceeded to ship it along with a bunch of other used Harleys he purchased on his trip to friggin’ Brussels, because there was a huge market over there for used Harleys…AND that was all right in the middle of “Desert Shield” when the Military was using every available shipping means to get tanks and Patriot Missile Batteries into Iraq and Kuwait…must have cost the guy a friggin’ fortune in shipping.

Anyway…back on topic…the Sporty is a very versatile bike. You can do a lot with them and there’s a ton of aftermarket support for all kinds of things from mods to services, even for the real old ones. Also, in the pricing area, I don’t think they’re too damaging on the wallet for what you get. Go back to the XR link ^^ and click “inventory” in the upper left hand corner. They’ve got a couple not too old XLs (1200s) in there for around $6,000…and this is a dealer! Think what you can do on eBay and CL. There’s XL1200C in the dealer’s inventory that has a real nice setup for 2up with a sissy bar…that’s what you can do. AND you should look at Bones Sporty because that has a nice 2up Corbin seat arrangement with a bar. Anyway, that’s my two cents (maybe five) on Sportys.

Overall, there’s a ton of good used stuff out there; not just Harleys. I think there are a lot of people that buy these things (motorcycles) really thinking they’re going to get into it and then wind up tripping over them in their garages. If you’ve got some time, that’s good, because I think there’s some real deals to be had.

I know the Sportster is a great bike, but I think if my primary goal is 2-up riding, I'm going to have to stay metric for a while. Had a chance to have my "little" Shadow 500 next to my friend's Sportster and the Harley is barely bigger. And I mean barely.

When I move to my next bike, it needs to be bigger than what I have now, and the Sportster is not it.

I was looking at a Sportster because I was jonesing for a Harley, and based on my criteria, the Sporster is the only one I could afford. (Criteria: 1) I have to pay cash. 2) I have very little cash.) I just love Harley's design, the sound, and the huge variety of aftermarket parts.

But I can buy the much larger Honda 1300 VTX (used) for less than I could buy a used Sportster. And I could buy a used Honda Shadow 1100 with a better seat and windscreen for just over half of what I could buy a used Sportster for.

So the Harley is probably still a few bikes down the road for me, when I'll be able to buy a Softail, or Dyna.

(BTW Bones, Love that '98.)

You won't be disappointed with the Shadow 1100. Try to find an ACE if you can, as opposed to a Sabre, Spirit, or Aero. They are all good. 2 up riding is not an issue on the 1100, wide variety of optional seats and plenty of power for 2up.
