New kid here and new to bikes. Got my first bike a few months ago and have been fixing it up. It's an old suzuki gs650 that I've almost got running. Still need to get my endorsement and get this bike registered which may turn ouut to a bit of a problem. So I was hoping someone here might be able to help me out and answer some questions about titles and registration

Welcome to the forum newkid91 I'm not too familiar with the ins and outs of titles and registrations on the bikes and especially not familiar with the regulations they have in Florida as I am up in Georgia. But there are several on the forum that will be able to help out if you let them know what you have questions about.

Check in with Mr. Bones. He has dealt with all sorts of title weirdness including getting lost titles replaced.

Well the man I bought the bike from had lost the title. He got the bike thru a trade and never got the title transferred to his name. So now I just have no idea about how to go about getting this thing titled and registered. An idea that has been suggested to me (which I don't like this too much) is to just go to the dmv and apply for a lost title as if it had already been in my name and I just lost it. Don't know if they would work though because I don't know if the dmv keeps records of titles.

Only the person who the bike is titled to can apply for a lost title. The DMV won't let anybody else do it. What year is the bike?

That's good. The older the better. A few years back, I used ITS Titles with success on 3 different occasions. Here's their site: http://www.its-titles.com/Basically, they register it in another state that doesn't require titles on motorcycles of a certain age, then send you the paperwork so you can register it in Florida. Their website is a little confusing so its probably better to just call for more info.

No problem. I hope it works out for you. Let us know how it goes and what ITS' rates are now. They seem to go up every year.

That's what it looked like the day I got it. I have since been working my butt off repairing/modifying it while trying to figure out how to title the thing. Here it is today: I modified it so it's a hard tail now, it has a new sportster tank on it, repainted the frame and just about everything else on it, got a new ignition, and now I'm in the middle of wiring the bike. I originally bought the bike for $150, got the seat for $50, tank was $80, a new ignition and I'd say maybe $300 in random things here and there so only about $750 into the bike so far. Something I didn't mention before though is that the sticker on the neck for the VIN got ruined when I painted it. I put some of that blue masking tape on it so I didn't paint over the vin and when I went to go peel the tape off the VIN sticker was just torn all to pieces. You can't read the VIN anymore so all that hard work I did may have been for nothing. I was reading on the site that mrbones showed me and theres a form that you need to send them that has to be filled out by a police officer and he has to inspect the bike mainly to make sure the VIN hasn't been messed with I think. So if I get a cop to check out the bike he's gonna see the VIN is ruined. I wrote the VIN number down, but it's just not on the bike anymore. I'm at a loss And I went to the DMV with the VIN I had and they ran it thru their system and nothing showed up. I also went and talked to the man I got the bike from today and he has no way of getting in contact with the guy the bike was last registered to. So now I have a titleless and VINless bike..... Man, I feel like an idiot for getting into this thing.

Looks like an interestingly cool project. Check to see if the VIN is stamped somewhere on the frame. I know Honda's have a metal inspection plate that I've discarded before because they also have it stamped on the frame. Usually on the head tube. If the frame has been painted or touched up many times, it may not be visible due to paint build up.

There is a number stamped into the frame, but it's a 15 digit number. I was told at the DMV that VIN's are 17 digit numbers.

Okay I know this isn't right, but is it possible to get a home made frame registered in florida? I've been looking into that, but haven't found much about it other than stuff about people buying a frame and having an MSO.

I don't think someone from the DMV is going to know anything about a 29 year old motorcycle. I did a quick search, and all the Suzuki's on this page have 15 digit VINs. http://www.cyclechaos.com/wiki/Suzuki_GS650GDoes your VIN have a similar number structure as the ones on that page?

Well the number stamped onto my bike is: 1GN71A0B2100200. The VIN for the 1981 GS650GLX on the page you showed me goes: JS1GP71L B 100001. The number on the sticker that was ruined though went: JS1GP71L8 B 2103762. Of course that sticker is gone so I can't check it anymore.... I think I may have just screwed the pooch on this one

Do you think I could use the number stamped into the frame as the VIN for ITS?

And hey, are you sure on the engine size? It should be somewhere on the motor. Either with stamped or raised lettering. I wonder if it's actually a 550.

I'm no expert on GS Suzuki's, but I'm not sure they made one in 1980. If that was the case, you have a 650 in a 1980 550 frame. But, it really doesn't matter. Now you can register it with the VIN that is stamped on the frame.
