Just wondering.

I certainly do appreciate all the racing venues that the AMA manages, but basically what I get out of my membership is roadside assistance and a few perks here and there. As for the roadside assistance, the thing was I had AAA but they do not provide roadside assistance for motorcycles except under a special program and an additional charge that doubled the annual rate. The AMA provides all roadside assistance for my cars and motorcycles (presumably on and off road) and, unlike AAA, provides the assistance to all family members who use my vehicles. Under AAA every family member needs to have their own membership number and card.

As for the perks (discounts on tickets/hotels/car rentals and things like that), while not as broad as what AAA had to offer, there are still a few that pop up every now and then. For instance, as of last night I now have an AMA discount on Supercross Tickets…it was in the monthly magazine, along with an awesome interview of Bob "Hurricane" Hanna.

Then lastly, there’s that whole motorcycle rights thing. The AMA is supposed to be taking a lead on that, although I can’t say that they’ve been very successful of late in accomplishing anything. But I could be wrong. I only know what I read, and I read a lot of bad things.

Anyway, that’s my 2-cents. What’s yours?

I have never considered joining. After hearing your comparisons of the roadside assistance benefits, I think I shall look into it. I sure do have a lot of cars....and bikes....

I am a former member and need to re-join.  Especially, now that I have a couple of trips planned this year.  Up until now, I haven't been far enough away that the wife couldn't bring the truck and the ramp if she had too.   Grin

I had been a member of AMA for approx.15 yrs on and off since the mid 70's. My memberships in the early years were for amature racing entry. In my later years it was to support AMA racing. I never looked at the perks, just wanted to support the industry. I cancelled my membership when the AMA let DMG TOTALLY f_ck up AMA RoadRacing. I will never re-join. They have alienated the major Japanese manufacaturers and made a shambles of the rules.

I use to be a member of AAA. I found their response times not to be very good where I live. They just have a contract with one small wrecker company. So both times my old car broke down it took them about five hours to get there. Sitting in a black car from 10am till 3pm on a Saturday in August doesn't make you too happy.

A few months after that my wife had a flat tire. She had a really bad cold and was just wanting to get home. She called AAA and then me. She was about 30 minutes from my office. I left work drove over, changed the tire and followed her to the tire store. She took my car on home. I waited about 30 minutes for the tire to be fixed. Drove home. So in total about 2 hours had passed. AAA called and said they were trying to find a wrecker and it shouldn't be much longer. I told them don't bother and the lady kind of got smart with me. I told her to just cancel my membership.

Hopefully if I need AMA for towing they will be better.  Grin We joined right after we bought the bikes.

YEAH, I am a member again.  I found out my last membership renewal was in 1997 and they cancelled it for good in 2002.  The customer service rep, attached my previous six years as a member to the new one towards the the twenty five years it takes to become a life member.

And, she is emailing me a confirmation letter in case my new card does not arrive before the FGT!   Grin
